Sustainable Masks We know how it important it is for everyone to wear a mask right now to help stop the spread of COVID-19. We also know both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC are asking the public to continue masking, regardless of vaccine status, if you are indoors and in highly transmissible areas. We, at Aid the Journey, are promoting that message— as well as are providing both disposable and sustainable masks for times when refugees may need to double up. What Doctors Wish Patients Knew about Double Masking We have purchased individually wrapped, disposable surgical masks, plus we have partnered with our local seamstress., Ms. Jamie Lee at A+ Alterations makes reusable, four-layer, fabric face masks. Ms. Lee’s design meets the WHO’s recommendations covering a person’s nose, mouth, and chin, while being secured with elastic loops. These masks also include an embedded nose wire and dual-layer filter, plus they’re fashionable! All it takes is a quick hand wash and our masks are ready to be reused! We train asylum seekers on how to get the proper fit for the best protection when distributing the donations. We purchase the masks at full price and then provide them, for free, to every refugee we service ages 2+. In 2020 Aid the Journey began providing flu fact sheets and brochures, printed in over a dozen of the most frequently spoken refugee languages, provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Our Founder is able to communicate with refugees who speak Arabic and French and has elementary level-Mandarin skills. ATJ also enlists volunteers who speak various languages to help support communication and education efforts while providing refugees with health materials printed specifically for refugee patients, in their native tongue. These materials provide ways to identify flu symptoms, plus critical personal hygiene and household cleaning tips. Every refugee who visited our free flu shot clinic received healthy boxed lunches and bottled water for their entire family, plus an eco-tote bag provided by Aid the Journey containing numerous medical necessities including free first aid kits, period packs containing organic feminine hygiene products and critical COVID-19 kits including thermometers plus reusable and sustainable face masks developed per CDC recommendations. Following the CDC’s #SleeveUp campaign and medical guidelines to #FightFlu, Aid the Journey proudly paid to immunize refugees during our first Free Flu Shot Clinic on October 31, 2020. This event would not have been possible without our new Medical Partner, Kids’ Doc On Wheels, and their Board-certified medical team. Kids’ Doc on Wheels donated use of their 40’ mobile medical unit and administered the flu shots. During the Halloween Free Flu Clinic we delivered treats, not tricks, to socially-distanced refugees waiting for their flu shot. Our young, costumed volunteer gave goodies plus we provided free coffee and hot chocolate donated by Refuge Coffee Co.
